Choosing a colour

The leather band is the same tan on every mug, so the enamel decides the contrast. Cream is the original and the most neutral. Mustard is the warmest and the one that photographs best. Khaki green sits closest to the leather itself, so the whole mug reads as one object. Blue gives the sharpest contrast against the band. Black is where an engraved name stands out hardest.

Why leather on a mug

Enamel conducts heat, which is the one real flaw of a camp mug. The leather band sits where your hand goes and takes the edge off it. The handle is wrapped for the same reason. It is a functional answer that happens to be the part worth engraving.

Care

Hand wash the enamel and keep the leather out of the water. Do not put these in a dishwasher — the heat and detergent will dry the band out and crack it. Wiped dry after use, the leather darkens with age in the same way the wallets do.
